Cautious Music for the “Scottish Play”

As a composer of theatre-based music, it is always a challenge to take on the plays of William Shakespeare. My association with director Karla Kash and the Heidelberg Theater program is giving me another chance. Two years ago, we collaborated on Measure for Measure. On November 13-16, 2025, we are taking our chances with one of the great tragedies, the so-called “Scottish play.” The real title appears above; traditional theater superstitions prevent me from calling it by name…..
Karla has elected to set her version of the famous play during the Prohibition era of the 1920s instead of 17th century Scotland. This enables the production to have a pronounced Art-Deco design, with costumes and props that are also appropriate to this period. The score that I have designed also salutes jazz styles of the first part of the twentieth century, along with more classical influences. As an added treat: The Witches sing, now and again!
Tickets are available from the Gundlach Theater box office for all four performances on the Heidelberg campus. For more information, please consult the link below:
There are three evening performances on November 13-15, with a 7 PM curtain. A final matinee performance will take place on Sunday, November 16, at 2 PM.
